Century Project for the Seattle Space Needle Named ENR Project of the Year, Best Renovation/Restoration

March 12, 2021

Engineering News-Record (ENR) named The Century Project for the Seattle Space Needle as its 2020 Project of the Year. BrandSafway was proud to be part of the team that Hoffman Construction, the general contractor, selected to work on this award-winning project. BrandSafway provided a unique access solution critical to the project’s success.

When Hoffman Construction realized traditional access methods weren’t viable to get workers more than 500 feet in the air to the work area, they partnered with BrandSafway to solve the unprecedented engineering challenge.

The solution was a 106-foot-diameter starter platform using the QuikDeck® Suspended Access System, which was then hoisted into place at 500 feet with 12 two-part Tractel hoists, each with an 8,800-pound capacity. Once secured, the platform was then built out to its full size of 135 feet in diameter at a weight of 174,000 pounds. BrandSafway then erected an all-season weather barrier, using Systems™ Scaffold and HAKI®, which could withstand a 115 mph wind load.

In addition to ENR’s recognition of the project, it was also a 2019 cover story in SAIA’s Scaffold & Access Magazine and named a 2019 ALH Access Project of the Year.
